Key Stage 1
After their first year of school in Reception the children move on to Key Stage 1. This covers Years 1 and 2. In Year 1 and 2, there are three classes: Oak Class (Mrs Dobbs) Currently Oak and Larch classes are mixed, with children from Year 1 and Year 2, and Cherry Class has Year 2 children only. The make- up of the classes varies each year depending on the number of children and their needs.

The National Curriculum As the children move from Reception into Year 1 they make the transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum to the National Curriculum. The class teachers recognise the importance of a smooth transition and continue an Early Years approach combined with National Curriculum objectives for the first half term in Year 1. For the remainder of Year 1 and Year 2, children are provided with stimulating and challenging learning opportunities that enable them to succeed with Year 1 and Year 2 objectives. Y1/2 key skill group activity Creative Curriculum Topics Throughout Key Stage One, children learn through well planned creative topics. The chosen topics link closely with the National Curriculum objectives for Science, Geography, History, Art, Design Technology and Music as well as taking the children’s interests into account.
Our topics also encompass our ‘Together’ Curriculum (click here for the Together Curriculum page) along with our Philosophy for Children approach (click here for the P4C page), allowing children to think more deeply about local and global issues. We aim to provide experiences that enhance the topic they are studying by arranging trips, visitors and topic ‘dress up’ days.
Y1/2 Science - Animals Y1/2 Exotic fruit tasting Maths and Literacy Maths (click here for the Maths page) and Literacy (click here for the Literacy page) run alongside the topics, and include ‘skills sessions’ for handwriting and arithmetic. The aim is to ensure that all pupils are given opportunities to access the Year 1 and Year 2 objectives to a greater depth. Practical Maths learning about shapes |
